The Five Seasons Hotel

I received these words on August 31st, 2009 from the Pacific College of Oriental medicene in NYC. That is the acupuncture school where I received treatment for three months from my dear Vera in Chicago. I transferred my info to the New York school before we moved, but alas, I never made it there. I did, however, make it to their newsletter emailing list…

Late Summer

In Traditional Chinese Medicine our bodies and our selves reflect the natural world we live in. Being in harmony with the seasons increases health and well being.

Late summer is considered a separate season in Traditional Chinese Medicine. In the middle of the Chinese calendar, late summer is a transition time between the expansive growth of spring and summer (yang energy) and the more quiet inward nature of fall and winter (yin energy). It has been said that it’s almost as if time stands still for a moment, as at the instant when a pendulum reverses its swing. This moment between the seasons creates a window of opportunity for us to center ourselves, strengthen our core selves, and support our health for the coming season.

This is a great time to support the stomach and digestive system, which are at the center of our health, allowing us to take in nutrients that support us, and regulating and harmonizing the effects of seasonal extremes. Foods that support the center are often mildly sweet, yellow or golden, and roundly shaped. Millet, sweet potatoes, garbanzo beans, ginger,, and small amounts of beef are excellent seasonal choices. Limit excessive raw vegetables and fruits (especially citrus) and dairy products (except goat milk) as late summer turns to fall.

Late summer is an ideal time for centering, simplicity, and quiet reflection. It is a great time to “digest” your experiences so far this year, sorting through which experiences are nourishing and should be assimilated and learned from, and which you can let go of.

Regular exercise keeps the qi and blood circulating, keeps reflection from becoming excessive (worry and obsession), and supports smooth transitions through the seasons and emotions.

It makes me very happy that Shane is coming to visit during this season.  He is my yin.  I haven’t seen him since April 15th.

Cause Organic is Wonderful Things

The conventional food that we have easy access to in America is grown in soil with synthetic chemicals and pesticides, and sprayed with the same stuff.  The vitamins and minerals in nutrient rich soil don’t make it into our food.  We feel hungry because our bodies are intaking empty, or nutrient-less, calories.  So we eat and weigh more, but are lacking in the life-sustaining vitamins we need and are designed to absorb.

Here is an article about the benefits of organic food from current.com:

Organic is more nutritious according to the French

A new report by the French Agency for Food Safety (AFSSA) has found that organic foods are better for you and contain less pesticides and nitrates, which have been linked to a range of health problems including diabetes and Alzheimer’s.

Andre Leu, Chairman of the Organic Federation of Australia, says the up-to-date exhaustive and critical evaluation of the nutritional quality of organic food and has found organic foods have higher levels of minerals and antioxidants.’

“The AFSSA study has been published in the peer reviewed scientific journal Agronomy for Sustainable Development ensuring that it has met rigorous scientific standards,” Leu said.

The major points of The French Agency for Food Safety study are:

1. Organic plant products contain more dry matter (more nutrient dense)

2. Have higher levels of minerals

3. Contain more anti-oxidants such as phenols and salicylic acid (known to protect against cancers, heart disease and many other health problems)

4. Organic animal products contain more polyunsaturated fatty acids
(protect against heart disease)

5. Carbohydrate, protein and vitamin levels are insufficiently documented

6. 94–100% of organic foods do not contain any pesticide residues

7. Organic vegetables contain far less nitrates, about 50% less (high nitrate levels are linked to a range of health problems including diabetes and Alzheimer’s)

8. Organic cereals contain similar levels of mycotoxins as conventional ones

In 2001, the French Agency for Food Safety (AFSSA) set up an expert working group to perform an exhaustive and critical evaluation of the nutritional and sanitary quality of organic food.

The AFSSA says they aimed for the highest quality scientific standards during the evaluation. The selected papers referred to well-defined and certified organic agricultural practices, and had the necessary information on design and follow-up, valid measured parameters and the
appropriate sampling and statistical analyses.

After more than two years of work involving about 50 experts from all specific areas including organic agriculture, a final consensus report was issued in the French language in 2003.

The current study published in the peer reviewed journal, in English, is a summary of this report and the relevant studies that have been published since 2003.

The conclusions of this study are different from the recent UK Food Standard Agency Study that was widely criticised by international experts for using flawed methodology and a conclusion that contradicted its own data.

Food Glorious Food

Mama went from 148 lbs to 125 lbs in 3 months eating this way. Her doc also took her off of her mood stabilizefood glorious food r, Zyprexa, as we started the diet. Over the last 3 years, Zyprexa made her gain ALOT of weight and it raised her blood sugar levels to a near-diabetic state. She lost 12.5 lbs the first month of this diet, mostly due to the medicene change. But continues to lose 2-4 lbs per month with the lifestyle change!  Her blood sugar and her BMI (Body Mass Index) are in the normal range again!

I had gained a few extra pounds on my trip to Utah and LA.  Nana’s cooking is tasty, but not good for the waistline, and Becca eats healthily, but in portions for a calorie-burning yoga instructor, not a motionless spinally-injured me.  After eating according to this paper for 2 months, I lost 7 lbs and am back at my high school weight! (Except in high school, it was all muscle, where as today, I’m still weak. But one step at a time…)

*There’s one change we made to the diet, drink your water separately from your meals.

**And since starting my nutrition program at the beginning of August, my diet has changed even more. But I thought this would be a good start for Clara. Food, Glorious Food
